Head of household vs single take-home on $70,000
Same Texas salary, two filing statuses. The 2026 standard deduction and brackets change the federal bill. Worked biweekly leftovers.
Filing status is not a personality. It is a box on the tax return that changes the standard deduction and which bracket table applies. People who qualify for head of household often still get paid as if payroll thinks they are single, until the W-4 is updated. This page prices one salary — $70,000 — in Texas, which has no wage income tax in our planning table, so the only swing is federal. Social Security and Medicare do not care which box you check.
What the paycheck tool actually changes
Single uses a 2026 standard deduction of $16,100. Head of household uses $24,150. That $8,050 gap is income that is not in the federal stack. The bracket tables also differ. Head of household keeps a wider 12% band before 22% starts. Neither status changes the 6.2% Social Security line or the 1.45% Medicare line on a wage this size. Extra 0.9% Medicare is not in play at $70,000.
On the paycheck calculator, $70,000, Texas, 26 periods, single: Social Security $4,340, Medicare $1,015, federal $6,570, state $0, annual leftover $58,075, biweekly $2,233.65. Same inputs, head of household: Social Security and Medicare stay $4,340 and $1,015, federal drops to $5,148, leftover $59,497, biweekly $2,288.35. The whole year is $1,422 more leftover. Per check that is $54.70. It is real money. It is not a different job.
Who may use the wider deduction
Head of household is not “I have a child somewhere.” The IRS wants you unmarried (or considered unmarried) at year end, paying more than half the cost of keeping up a home, and a qualifying person living with you for more than half the year, with exceptions for a parent. A boyfriend, a roommate, and a child you do not support do not flip the switch. We do not decide if you qualify. The form instructions do.
If you do qualify and payroll still withholds as single, your checks look like the $2,233.65 line all year and you get the difference back as a refund, or you owe less. That is not extra pay. It is a timing difference. Update the W-4 if you want the $54.70 in the deposit instead of in April. Our calculator does not read a W-4. It prices the status you pick.
What this compare leaves out
Child tax credit, dependent care, earned income credit, and a pretax 401(k) are not in either number. Those can dwarf $1,422. A city tax is not in either number. Texas wage tax being zero is why we picked it. Run the same $70,000 in a taxing state and both leftovers fall by the planning rate on taxable income. The federal gap stays. The state bill is a second layer.
Married filing jointly is a third table, not a halfway point between these two. Do not average single and head of household and call it a couple. Two earners in one household need the joint page, or two single runs added only after you know they are not filing together.
Type 70000, Texas, biweekly, then switch only the filing status on the paycheck calculator. You should match $58,075 and $59,497. IRS Publication 501 decides whether head of household is even allowed. This site is an estimate, not a filing position.
