What the 2026 Social Security wage base does to a paycheck

Social Security stops at $184,500 of wages. Medicare does not. $180,000 vs $220,000, single, Texas, from the paycheck tool.

Social Security tax on a W-2 job is 6.2% of wages until the wage base, then it stops. Medicare at 1.45% does not stop. People who get a raise through that base notice the Social Security line freeze and think payroll made a mistake. In the 2026 table this site ships, the base is $184,500. This page prices $180,000 and $220,000, single, Texas, 26 periods, so you can see the cap without a state tax mixed in.

$180,000 is still under the cap

Social Security is 6.2% of the whole $180,000, which is $11,160. Medicare is 1.45%, $2,610. No extra 0.9% Medicare, because $180,000 is under the $200,000 single threshold. Federal income tax is $31,934 after the $16,100 standard deduction and the bracket stack. State is $0 in Texas. Annual leftover $134,296. Biweekly $5,165.23.

Every extra wage dollar under the cap still pays 6.2% to Social Security, 1.45% to Medicare, and whatever federal bracket that dollar sits in. The cap has not helped yet.

$220,000 is over the cap and over extra Medicare

Social Security is 6.2% of $184,500 only, which is $11,439. The last $35,500 of wages pays no Social Security employee tax. Medicare at 1.45% still hits all $220,000, which is $3,190. Extra 0.9% Medicare hits the $20,000 above $200,000, which is $180. The paycheck tool folds ordinary Medicare and the extra into one Medicare line: $3,370. Federal is $41,704. Leftover $163,487. Biweekly $6,287.96.

From $180,000 to $220,000 the salary rose $40,000. Leftover rose $29,191, not $40,000. Social Security rose only $279 ($11,439 minus $11,160) because most of the new wages were above the base. Federal rose $9,770. Medicare including the extra rose $760. That is the whole leak in a no-tax state. A taxing state would take another slice of taxable income on top.

What the cap is not

The employer still matches Social Security only up to the same base. You do not see the match on the stub. Self-employed people pay both halves, and their cap math uses net earnings after the 92.35% factor. Do not paste these W-2 dollars into a 1099 plan. Use the 1099 calculator for profit.

A bonus can push you over the base in one check. Payroll should stop Social Security once year-to-date wages hit the base. If two employers both withhold the full 6.2% because neither sees the other job, you can have overpaid Social Security. The return reconciles that. This calculator sees one annual wage, not two employers.

Pretax 401(k) contributions reduce wages subject to income tax. They generally do not reduce Social Security wages. Our tool does not subtract a 401(k) at all, so both the federal bill and the story above assume the full salary is taxable wages. If you defer a lot, federal tax here is high on purpose.

Run 180000 and 220000 on the paycheck calculator, single, Texas. Social Security should print $11,160 then $11,439. If the second number keeps climbing at 6.2% of $220,000, you are not looking at this year’s table. SSA and the IRS set the base. Our figure is the 2026 planning cap shipped with the site.
